How to Be a CPA

Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) help their clients with their tax and financial issues. In order to be a trusted CPA and have a long career, you have to get certified after completing all of the education and training needed to pass such certification.

CPAs perform internal and external audits for companies to ensure full compliance with tax codes and other legal matters. If you are able to establish yourself as a well-respected CPA with a credible reputation, you can create an opportunity for a long and rewarding career. Certification requirements vary from state to state in the United States, but most states require completing a minimum of 150 semester hours of post-secondary study, including some graduate-level coursework. After you meet all of the educational requirements, you can take the CPA exams. There are four exams, and you have eighteen months to pass them all to become a CPA.

Before you can start your post-secondary education, you have to obtain a Bachelor’s degree. It’s recommended that you major in Finance or a related field, but it is not required. Once you have this degree, you can start studying for your series of exams and complete your additional coursework. You should also try to gain as much experience as possible before you take your exams. Many states require you to complete a certain amount of work hours in an accounting firm before you can take the exams.
